Acoustic thermometry

Your thermostat reads one spot on the wall. Gene reads the room with sound.

Two Gene Scouts are designed to pass a quick ping of sound across your room. Sound is a little slower in cooler air, so the timing can show how warm the middle of the room is, not just the wall.

How it works

Sound is the thermometer.

Acoustic thermometry, in three steps.

1

Ping

One Scout sends a short ping of sound, above the range of human hearing.

2

Listen

The other Scout times it, straight across and off the floor and ceiling, while the first hears its own echoes. Then they swap. Sound is slower in cool air, so every path tells a temperature.

3

Map

About once a minute, Gene is designed to turn those timings into a temperature map of the air between the two Scouts, from floor to ceiling.

Simulation

See the room

A room is never one temperature.

Each square is a pocket of air between two Scouts: orange where it is warmer than the room's average, grey where it is cooler. See how the middle of the room compares with the walls, and how it changes from floor to head height.

Inside Gene Scout

What's inside a Scout.

The parts a Scout is built around, on one prototype board.

  • Ultrasonic transducer: sends the ping and listens for it
  • Temperature + humidity sensor: a reference reading at each Scout
  • Wi-Fi 6 module: no hub, no wiring
  • 5-year battery
